Do You Need Waterproof Covers?

Do you need waterproof covers?

Maybe.

Our Waterproof covers are made in the USA by Sunbrella. it is an acrylic textile with a vinyl coating on its back side. This makes it extremely durable and 100% waterproof. This also makes it not very breathable.

the problem with waterproof covers is that they can trap moisture. Some cover manufacturers will include a vent or some way to let air in...but they don't work. There is no airflow beneath the cover, and the vent will not affect this.

That being said, waterproof covers are the solution in extreme climates. If you live in area that gets heavy rain or snow throughout the year, or just for a season, waterproof covers might the right thing for you. Both Sunbrella and Hydrofend fabrics are resistant to mold and mildew growth, but should still be removed once the rain has passed to let any moisture that has accumulated to escape. It's not that much of a concern though, as your furniture will be protected, regardless.

At CoverMetrix, we usually recommend our Hybrid option for most environments, as the combination of a waterproof top with breathable side panels checks all of the boxes - water will roll off the waterproof top (thanks to the CoverMetrix tailored fit) and the breathable sides will allow moisture to naturally escape. From the outside, you won't be able to spot the difference in the two materials used - only when looking inside will you notice that the top has a vinyl coating on the back.

Even our breathable Sunbrella covers have enough water-resistance in the weave and coating that your furniture should stay dry even in the harshest of storms... it's in the extended downpours that you may need a waterproof cover.
